Detroit Pistons Getting Inside 2008-11-13

Even Allen Iverson sees the value of practice these days.

Iverson, whose infamous vent against practicing when he played with Philadelphia is still replayed on sports talk shows, went through his first extended practice since joining the Pistons on Monday. That gave Iverson a chance to start getting into a rhythm with his new teammates after they lost the first two times they played with him.

The hard work produced a 100-92 victory over Sacramento on Tuesday in the opener of a four-game West Coast swing. The Pistons will remain in California to play Golden State on Thursday and the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday.

Iverson had his first 30-point outing with Detroit and also had nine of the team's 16 assists.

"We had a little bit of time to go in the gym and get some practice in, and that's important," he said. "It's harder coming out here and going into a game with no chemistry, but we're getting our chemistry a little bit better on both ends of the court. It's going to take a little bit of time, but we're getting it."

The biggest adjustment for the Pistons is taking advantage of Iverson's driving ability. Backcourt partner Richard Hamilton is mired in a 4-for-24 shooting slump, but Tayshaun Prince has averaged 22.7 points in the three games Iverson has played. Prince has created opportunities for himself with dribble penetration along with benefiting from Iverson's kickout passes.

Detroit's big men are also starting to use Iverson to their advantage. Rasheed Wallace, Kwame Brown and Jason Maxiell all made dunks after Iverson broke down Sacramento's defense.

"I get into the paint a lot and draw a lot of attention," Iverson said. "All I want these guys to do is get in spots where they can have easy shots - easy layups and dunks. That's what they did (Tuesday). Guys played off my penetration and took advantage of it."

PISTONS 100, KINGS 92: The Pistons outscored the Kings, who played without injured leading scorer Kevin Martin (ankle), 25-15 in the fourth quarter to snap a two-game losing streak. Sacramento committed six of its 13 turnovers during the quarter while the Pistons made just seven during the game. Allen Iverson and Tayshaun Prince combined for 56 points while Rasheed Wallace (three blocks) led the defense. Reserve forward Spencer Hawes (19 points) led the Kings.
