PLAYER NEWS:
--G Chucky Atkins is on the training camp roster but he'll have to earn his way onto the team. Atkins, who played for the Pistons from 2000-03, appeared in just 56 games the last two seasons while battling groin and knee injuries. There are 14 players in camp with guaranteed contracts and he's not one of them. Atkins will try to hook on as the third point guard behind Rodney Stuckey and Will Bynum. "I don't think I have to shine or do anything different," he said. "They know what I bring to the table. I just basically have to show them that I'm healthy."
--G Rodney Stuckey has his hands full trying to be a distributor for a team filled with offensive weapons. But John Kuester also expects him to develop into a dominant defender.
"He's got the potential to be an outstanding defender because of his size, his strength and his quickness," Kuester said. "He could be very special in that area."
--G Will Bynum could be squeezed out of the rotation if Ben Gordon can handle the point when Stuckey needs a rest. In any case, his playing time could be very limited with Hamilton, Gordon and Stuckey getting most of the minutes at guard. But Kuester says Bynum is in his plans.
"Will has really worked hard this past summer in Chicago, working on his game and you can tell he's in great shape," Kuester said. "I expect big things from him."
DRAFT PICKS:
Austin Daye, F, 6-11, Gonzaga (first round) -- Very versatile offensive player whose lack of strength will be a liability defensively. He'll be an upgrade at the backup small forward spot.
DaJuan Summers, F, 6-8, Georgetown (second round) -- The Pistons view him mainly as a small forward, though he played a lot of power forward in college last season. Isn't afraid to mix it up but needs to become a better ball-handler.
Jonas Jerebko, F, 6-9, Sweden (second round) -- The Pistons were impressed with his all-around game and size during a team workout and believe his best position is power forward. Can bull his way onto the roster with a strong summer-league showing.
