Bill Laimbeer to join Minnesota Timberwolves' coaching staff

Posted by Dave Dial Aug. 30

It looks as if former Detroit Piston "Bad Boy" Bill Laimbeer made the right choice when he decided to gamble and resign as head coach of the Detroit Shock. His goal is to work on becoming a NBA head coach, and becoming an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves is a good first step.

August 30, Star Tribune: New Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis will add former Detroit Pistons bad-boy center Bill Laimbeer and former Sacramento Kings coach Reggie Theus to his staff, according to a league source...

Laimbeer, 52, resigned as the Detroit Shock's head coach and general manager in June after winning three WNBA titles in seven seasons as its coach. He did so in a surprise move presumably to pursue a coaching career in the NBA, where he won two NBA titles with the Pistons displaying an agitating playing style that earned him the nickname "His Heinous."

Joe Dumars says Pistons still committed to defense

The Detroit Pistons wasted little time at the start of free agency to shore up their roster, signing two talented scorers in Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva.

The move turned the heads of many long-time fans of the organization. Did the signing of two high-powered scorers who have the reputation of being below-average defenders signify a philosophical shift for a team that prided itself on defense? Not according to general manager Joe Dumars.

August 28, Pistons .com: Lest people forget, Chauncey and Rip didn't come here as these great defenders. They came here as offensive players. Chauncey was talented offensively, Rip was a scorer. They won a championship because they made a commitment to try to defend people. Just because you address the need to score more, doesn't change your mind-set to have to stop people. It won't change our mind-set. Kuester and I have talked about that. We are committed to that and we're going to be committed to that with these players, that you've got to stop somebody. I don't care how talented you are offensively, you've still got to give a big-time effort defensively if you're going to win in this league.
