NBA rankings 1. L.A Lakers: Defending champs start the new season at the top simply based on last year. 2. Boston Celtics: Win at Cleveland was impressive since Cavs were 39-2 at home last season. 3. Orlando Magic: Good team got better as long as Vince Carter can play team Basketball. 4. San Antonio Spurs: Still the only real threat the Lakers have in the West. (Sorry Nuggets) 5. Cleveland Cavaliers: Don't fret about 0-2 start. LeBron's boys will still win 60-plus game. 6. Quick takes from the NBA Shaquille O'Neal is looking to continue a sideline career in law enforcement now that he's in Ohio playing for the Cavaliers. Spokesman John O'Brien of the Cuyahoga County sheriff's office says the Cavs' center has applied to become a special deputy. He would have the right to carry a gun and make arrests but not be a paid, formal employee. O'Neal previously served roles with law enforcement agencies in Arizona, Virginia and Florida. The sheriff has forwarded the application to the state agency that must consider the request to deputize O'Neal. State attorney general's spokeswoman Holly Hollingsworth says that if approved, O'Neal would need 36 hours of police training and would have to take the Ohio police exam. ... Much has been made about the Detroit Pistons adding shooting guard Ben Gordon when their best player, Richard Hamilton, plays the same position. But they say it's not a problem ? in part because they both played for the same college. "I don't think there's ever been a problem, especially in this locker room," Hamilton said of sharing time with Gordon. "We're UConn guys. We know how to win. We just go out there and try to feed off each other on the floor." Hamilton scored 25 points and Gordon added 22 in a season-opening win over Memphis. ... Golden State Warriors swingman Stephen Jackson wants to be traded. The Warriors want to trade him ? but they aren't about to give their best player away. According to Chris Broussard of ESPN.com, rumors are that Cleveland and Denver have both expressed interest in landing Jackson. The problem is that the Cavs don't want to give up Zydrunas Ilgausksas and the Nuggets haven't offered enough, either. ... Many NBA teams are trying to cut costs, making it difficult for some players to get the raises they expect, as Utah's Carlos Boozer found out this summer before opting to return for the final season of his contract with the Jazz . "I don't know if the reality of the economy has sunk in with the agents," an unnamed front-office executive told TNT analyst David Aldridge as reported on NBA.com. "One is the economy; two is we don't know what's going to be in the new CBA (collective bargaining agreement)." ... Dallas owner Mark Cuban apparently isn't so sure that the Lakers made the right choice in adding Ron Artest. "I think (Artest) will add some character to that team," Cuban told the L.A. Times. "Whether it will be positive or negative will be interesting to see." ? Compiled from Internet and wire sources
